Nakuru County’s Livestock, Fisheries, and Veterinary Services Chief Officer, Dr. Michael Cheruiyot, conducted an inspection of the nearing completion Hellsgate slaughterhouse in Naivasha Sub- County. The advanced facility, with a budget of Ksh.23 million, is poised to become a pivotal asset in the region, designed to handle a daily capacity of 100 cattle and 150 goats and sheep.

The inspection, a step in ensuring the facility meets the highest standards, revealed the progress made in its construction. Once equipped and operational, the Hellsgate slaughterhouse is expected to significantly contribute to the livestock sector, offering an efficient and modern space for processing cattle, goats, and sheep.

Chief Officer Dr. Cheruiyot took the opportunity to reassure sector stakeholders and local residents of the County Government’s unwavering commitment to projects and programs aimed at improving livestock production. Under the leadership of H.E Governor Susan Kihika, the government is actively facilitating initiatives that strengthen the livestock industry.

The commitment extends beyond infrastructure development. Ongoing livestock vaccination drives against prevalent diseases such as Foot and Mouth, Lumpy Skin Disease, and Rabies are part of the comprehensive approach to create disease-free zones. This not only safeguards the health of the livestock but also ensures the sustainability of the sector.

Hon. Virginia Wamaitha, the area MCA, expressed optimism about the positive impact the new slaughterhouse would have on the community. She emphasized the potential for job creation, particularly for the youth, once the facility is operational. The project aligns with broader economic development goals, offering employment opportunities and contributing to the overall growth of the local economy.

The collaborative efforts of various stakeholders were evident during the inspection. Dr. Veronica Wanjohi, the Director in charge of Veterinary Services, played a crucial role in overseeing the facility’s compliance with veterinary standards. Additionally, Maimahiu Ward Administrator David Kimani and other officials were present, showcasing the collective dedication to the successful implementation of the project.

As the new Hellsgate slaughterhouse progresses towards completion, the anticipation among residents and stakeholders is palpable. Beyond being a modern processing facility, it symbolizes Nakuru County’s commitment to elevating its livestock sector, ensuring the well-being of animals, and creating avenues for economic empowerment. With a focus on quality, efficiency, and sustainability, the Hellsgate slaughterhouse is poised to become a beacon of progress for the entire livestock industry in the region.
