Empowering Motorcycle Riders for a Safer and Thriving Boda Boda Sector

County Government of Nakuru, in collaboration with private stakeholders, organized a sensitization forum that benefitted thousands of motorcycle riders across the county. The initiative aims to empower riders with knowledge and skills, fostering a more regulated and sustainable industry.

Mr. Kibet Kurgat, the Chief Officer for Cooperatives, emphasized the county administration’s commitment to capacity building within the boda boda industry. Acknowledging the role played by motorcycle transport in Nakuru County, Kurgat highlighted its significance not only in providing critical transportation but also in offering job opportunities to many.

Officiating the forum, Mr. Kibet outlined the county’s plans to formulate policies that create a conducive business environment for boda boda riders. He underscored the need for regulation, citing the adverse effects of an unregulated industry on public safety, security, and health. The county’s vision is to unlock the full socio-economic potential of the boda boda sector by instating effective measures.

Encouraging the riders to organize themselves, Mr. Kibet urged the formation of savings and credit co-operative organizations (Saccos). This move, he explained, would enable them to enjoy economies of scale, particularly through the Cooperative Revolving Fund—a low-interest-rate loan set to be launched by the County Government.

The sensitization forum covered crucial topics such as financial management, customer service, and business management. Veronica Njiiri, the Project Coordinator for Trade, and officials from Nakuru branch Absa Bank were among the stakeholders present, underlining the collaborative nature of the initiative.

This approach to capacity building reflects a commitment to not only regulate the industry but also to uplift the livelihoods of the riders. By equipping them with essential skills and promoting cooperative structures, Nakuru County aims to transform the boda boda sector into a safer, more organized, and economically impactful component of the local transportation network. As these policies and initiatives take shape, the future holds the promise of a thriving and regulated boda boda sector, contributing significantly to Nakuru County’s economic growth and public welfare.
