Umoja Water project

Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika has officially launched the Kshs51.4 million Umoja Water Project in Visoi Ward, Rongai Sub-county, marking a major milestone in her administration’s ongoing efforts to provide reliable access to clean and affordable water for all county residents. The project is a key component of Governor Kihika’s agenda to improve water infrastructure, ensuring that households across Nakuru County receive a steady supply of safe drinking water.

Affordable and Reliable Water Supply

The Umoja Water Project kiosk will provide 24-hour water availability at a highly affordable rate of just 1 shilling for 20 litres. Utilizing a fully digital and automated kiosk system, the project makes it easier for residents to access water seamlessly and efficiently. This is a huge relief for the over 12,500 residents of Lusaka, Umoja, Kayanet, Tumaini, Chergei, Kayole, and Boito villages, who previously had to travel long distances to fetch water.

During the launch, Governor Kihika reaffirmed her commitment to improving the lives of Nakuru residents by ensuring basic services such as water are readily available.

“This project reflects our ongoing efforts to ensure that no family has to walk long distances or struggle to access safe water. Water is a right, and my administration is dedicated to ensuring every home in Nakuru County has access to this essential resource,” she said.

Project Scope and Components

The project is comprehensive in its scope. It includes the drilling and equipping of a solar-powered borehole, the construction of a 100m³ steel tank elevated at a height of 12 meters, and the installation of a rising main to ensure efficient water distribution throughout the area. The Umoja Water Project was undertaken in collaboration with World Vision as part of a broader water infrastructure development initiative aimed at improving living standards for the community.

Additionally, the ongoing NARUWASCO water line will further augment the borehole’s supply, ensuring that there is a continuous and sufficient water flow to meet the growing needs of the population. With these enhancements, the residents of Visoi Ward will not only have access to clean water but will also enjoy a stable and consistent supply, especially during periods of peak demand.

Enhancing Community Livelihoods

Governor Kihika’s administration is not only focusing on water but also rolling out various initiatives aimed at empowering local communities. During her visit to Rongai Sub-County, the Governor highlighted the ongoing upgrade of Kandutura Health Centre, which will improve access to quality healthcare services. She also pointed to the distribution of sunflower seeds to farmers in the area as part of her broader efforts to promote agricultural diversity and enhance food security.

Moreover, farmers in Rongai are benefitting from subsidized Artificial Insemination (AI) services, designed to boost livestock farming and improve livestock productivity. The Governor emphasized that these efforts will help farmers increase their earnings, reduce poverty, and contribute to overall economic growth in the sub-county.

Infrastructure Development and Economic Growth

In line with her administration’s goal of stimulating economic activity, Governor Kihika also discussed the ongoing construction of two modern markets in Rongai, which will serve as key hubs for trade and commerce. Additionally, she announced that the Salgaa Level 4 Hospital has been officially handed over to the contractor, a step that will further enhance healthcare services in the region once completed. The Governor is optimistic that these investments will contribute to better healthcare outcomes, reduce the economic burden on families, and create new job opportunities for locals.

Promoting Water Sustainability

As part of her commitment to promoting sustainable water use, Governor Kihika also distributed water tanks to 10 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers in Visoi Ward. The tanks will support rainwater harvesting and ensure that the ECDE centers have a reliable water supply for sanitation and daily use, reducing their dependency on external sources of water. The Governor reiterated her administration’s dedication to supporting education by ensuring schools and learning institutions have the necessary infrastructure to thrive.

The launch of the Umoja Water Project in Visoi Ward underscores Governor Susan Kihika’s relentless drive to deliver on her promises to the people of Nakuru County. With water being a key priority in her administration, this project not only improves the quality of life for thousands of residents but also sets the stage for continued development across the county. By investing in essential services like water, healthcare, and agriculture, the Governor is laying a strong foundation for Nakuru’s growth, ensuring that all residents can look forward to a brighter, more prosperous future.
