To promote education and address financial challenges faced by students, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has disbursed Kshs. 177 million through the county bursary program. The funds are set to benefit more than 2,000 needy students in Kuresoi South Sub-county, spanning universities, colleges, and both special and secondary schools.
Governor Kihika, while distributing the cheques at Keringet Ward, reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to supporting the education sector in Nakuru County. Recognizing education as a pivotal equalizer in society, she urged parents to actively engage in their children’s academic journey, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that no student is kept away from school due to financial constraints.
During the distribution event, Governor Kihika stressed the significance of bursaries in breaking down financial barriers to education. She expressed her willingness to make sacrifices to ensure that students can continue their studies. Additionally, she called on parents to join hands with her administration in supporting students, particularly those facing economic challenges and highlighted the need to eliminate any hindrances to education, including the risk of early marriages.
Governor Kihika also challenged the county legislature to enhance the bursary program, advocating for increased funding to cover more students in need across various wards. Currently, each ward receives a minimum of Sh2 million, and the governor promised an additional Sh1 million in the next fiscal year.
Acknowledging the transformative impact of education, beneficiaries of the bursary program shared their gratitude. Faith Chemtai, an orphan and recipient of the bursary, expressed her appreciation, stating that without the governor’s support, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to pursue her studies. She pledged to work hard to assist others in society.
Elizabeth Chemngetich, another beneficiary, highlighted the positive impact the bursary would have on education within the sub-county, emphasizing its role in creating a brighter future for students.
The event was attended by key figures, including Deputy Governor David Kones, Acting County Secretary Dr Samuel Mwaura, Executive Members led by Education CEC Zipporah Wambui, Chief Officers, a host of MCAs, and various education stakeholders. The collaborative effort aims to uplift the educational landscape in Kuresoi South Sub County and empower students to pursue their academic aspirations without financial impediments.
