Health Department Holds Refresher Training to Enhance Maternal Health

Refresher Training to Enhance Maternal Health

The Nakuru County Department of Health Services has intensified its efforts to improve maternal health by conducting regular reviews and refresher training for healthcare workers involved in Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) Committees. These committees, operating at county, sub-county, and facility levels, are tasked with auditing maternal deaths and implementing strategies to prevent future occurrences.

While speaking at a two-day data review session, County Chief Nursing Officer Wendy Tirop highlighted the importance of these continuous reviews.

“In June and July, we had no maternal deaths. This is due to the department’s commitment to improving the quality of maternal and child health care, alongside the successful implementation of the Primary Healthcare system. Community health promoters are actively following up with and referring pregnant mothers at the community level,” Tirop stated.

The County has achieved a remarkable 90% coverage for first Antenatal Care (ANC) visits, but Tirop emphasized the need for early attendance.

“Mothers should attend their first ANC visit before 12 weeks of pregnancy for better follow-up and improved outcomes. Ideally, a mother should attend at least eight ANC sessions throughout her pregnancy to ensure safe and healthy outcomes,” she advised.

Tirop urged continued collaboration between healthcare workers and communities to further enhance maternal health services and reduce risks for pregnant women across Nakuru County.
