Department of Health in Nakuru County orchestrated a pivotal multi-agency meeting, focusing on key aspects of disability assessment and categorization. The gathering, held today, brought together diverse perspectives and expertise to enhance the effectiveness of disability-related initiatives.
Michael Kaburu, the Director of the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD), played a role in offering varied insights to complement the efforts of the multidisciplinary team. Led by Dr. Joy Mugambi, the County Director for Health Administration and Planning, the team delved into vital issues such as disability assessment methodologies, outreach strategies for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and vetting processes.
Expressing a commitment to creating a more accessible and inclusive environment for PWDs, Dr. Joy Mugambi outlined the Department of Health’s initiative to empower Community Health Promoters. These promoters will play a pivotal role in conducting effective outreach programs, ensuring the seamless registration of PWDs and facilitating their access to essential services.
The forum, convened by County Executive Committee Member for Health, Roselyn Mungai, aligns with Governor Susan Kihika’s overarching agenda. The county’s vision now involves linking households directly to PWDs, streamlining the registration process, and facilitating enhanced service access in a holistic manner.
“We have a big opportunity to utilize primary health hubs and spokes, coupled with a multidisciplinary team, for efficiency in service delivery,” emphasized Dr. Mugambi. This approach reflects a strategic utilization of existing healthcare infrastructure to provide comprehensive and efficient services to individuals with disabilities.
The collaborative efforts between the County’s Department of Health, NCPWD, and other stakeholders underscore a commitment to overcoming barriers faced by PWDs. By addressing critical aspects such as disability assessment, outreach, and vetting processes, Nakuru County is taking tangible steps towards building a more inclusive and supportive community for Persons with Disabilities. The forum signals a collective determination to ensure that every resident, regardless of ability, has equal access to the resources and services they need for a healthy and fulfilling life.
