Potato farmers in Kuresoi South Sub-county gathered at Pombo in Keringet Ward for an aggregation fair field day focused on improving productivity and income through enhanced farming practices. The event provided hands-on training in pre- and post-harvest management, quality sorting, grading, and gross margin analysis to help farmers maximize their earnings from potato farming.
The field day emphasized proper agronomic practices, including planting, harvesting, and marketing techniques. Agriculture CECM Leonard Bor encouraged farmers to join groups and cooperatives, noting that collective action enhances bargaining power and improves profitability. He further advised farmers to adopt a weight-based pricing system by selling potatoes per kilogram rather than by bag, which often undervalues their produce.
Farmers also received expert advice on nutrition-sensitive agriculture and pest management strategies for combating common potato pests and diseases. Subcounty plant clinic officers were present to provide targeted solutions to improve crop health and yield.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Cereal Growers Association – Farm to Market Alliance (CGA-FTMA). Agribusiness Coordinator Lenah Mwangi highlighted the importance of minimum tillage as a conservation farming practice in the face of climate change and its impact on productivity.
This initiative underscores the Nakuru County Government’s commitment to empowering farmers with knowledge and resources to enhance agricultural output and secure better livelihoods.
