At least 300 households, including public institutions, farmers, and a dispensary in Visoi Ward, Rongai Sub-county, are set to benefit from a clean and sustainable water supply following the solarization of the Gwa Kirani Water Project.
The project, initiated by the Nakuru County Government under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program, involves the solarization of the Gwa Kirani borehole and the installation of 6.2 kilometres of pipeline to extend water access to Kandutura, Tuiyotich, Kimangu, and surrounding areas.
During the official handover of the project to the contractor, County Executive for Water, Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Dr Nelson Maara, alongside the Climate Change Unit, reaffirmed the county’s dedication to climate-resilient solutions.
Area MCA Hellen Megek and Chief Officer Edward Gitau emphasized that the initiative aligns with Governor Susan Kihika’s vision of sustainable water infrastructure, reducing reliance on expensive electricity-powered systems and ensuring long-term water security.
Impact and Sustainability
Once completed, the project will provide a reliable and affordable water supply for residents, improve hygiene and sanitation standards, support agriculture and livestock farming, enhance climate resilience and mitigate the effects of drought and erratic rainfall.
The County Government of Nakuru, through FLLoCA, continues to champion climate-smart water solutions to foster sustainable development and improve livelihoods.
Accompanying the delegation were Climate Change Unit members led by Kimani Kuria, Water Officer Paul Muhuhe, Naruwascco representatives, and ward climate change committees, all committed to ensuring successful implementation and long-term management of the project.
