Nakuru County advances Urban Development Strategies with CUIDS



The County Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development, is concluding the preparation process for the County Urban Institutional Development Strategy (CUIDS). The CUIDS identifies steps towards the adoption of development strategies for urban areas and is one of the conditionalities towards qualifications for the Kenya Urban Support Programme Phase 2, (KUSP II).

The department is seeking insights from stakeholders and partners that include the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the Civil Society Urban Development Platform, the Council of Governors, the Urban Committee and the State Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Speaking during a CUIDS review consultative workshop the Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development Kamau Kuria, revealed that the County government of Nakuru is keen to have a document that shall have a broad and more inclusive target outcome, able to attract diverse interests from potential partners now and in the future.

The Chief Officer for Land and Physical Planning Catherine Changwony reiterated the importance of GIS in acquiring live and active data to enrich such key documents noting that Nakuru was finalizing the setting up of a GIS Lab.

During the workshop, an online dashboard on the Nakuru Urban Development Priorities Visualization System was piloted. The CUIDS will be subject to a thorough approval process with the final input and approval coming from the county executive Committee. Adoption by the Nakuru County Assembly is also proposed as a final step in the ownership process.

Others present included Planner Ambwere of SDHUD, Planner Bwika of CoG, George Wesonga of CSUDP and technical officers from several departments of the County Government of Nakuru.
