United to Protect Vital Forests

In a joint effort to safeguard the region’s vital ecosystems, Nakuru County’s Department of Water, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, under the leadership of CECM Dr Nelson Maara, has partnered with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to launch a Participatory Forest Management plan. The initiative will cover Menengai, Bahati, Dundori, Logiman, and Kiptunga forests.

This collaborative venture, involving the county government, local communities, KFS, and various stakeholders, aims to combat logging and encroachment while promoting sustainable forest use. The signing of the Forest Management Agreement underscores the commitment to preserving these natural resources through community involvement.

Dr. Nelson Maara emphasized the county’s dedication to fostering a harmonious relationship between communities and forests. The success of this endeavour relies on ongoing cooperation, dedication, and active participation from all stakeholders. Together, they strive to ensure the flourishing of these forests for future generations, providing essential ecosystem services, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change.

The launch event saw the participation of key figures, including County Forest Conservator Monicah Masibo, a representative from the World Wide Fund, and officials from the Kenya Forest Service. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward sustainable environmental conservation in Nakuru County.
