In a commendable move towards economic empowerment, Boda Boda riders from Shabab ward in Nakuru Town West Sub County have taken a significant step by forming the Shabab Vision Boda Boda Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO). This initiative, lauded by Nakuru County Chief Officer for Cooperatives, Mr. Kibet Kurgat, serves as an inspiring example for riders across the county to explore the benefits of collaborative financial endeavors.
During a meeting with members and officials of the Shabab Vision Boda Boda SACCO (VBBS), Chief Officer Kibet Kurgat expressed his appreciation for the proactive step taken by the riders. He emphasized the importance of such SACCOs in building resilience and sustainable incomes for their members, highlighting the potential for economic and community development.
Mr. Kurgat extended the county’s readiness to support and position the VBBS to play a greater role in facilitating economic and development agendas, both for its members and at the county level. The formation of SACCOs among Boda Boda riders aligns with the broader vision of Nakuru County under the leadership of H.E. Governor Susan Kihika, which seeks to empower various sectors for sustained growth.
Encouraging a culture of savings and investment, Mr. Kurgat urged Boda Boda riders to explore the diverse products offered by the SACCO. This includes embracing public participation forums to articulate their issues, particularly those pertaining to their sector. The cooperative approach not only strengthens financial inclusion but also provides a platform for collective decision-making and addressing common challenges.
Nakuru County, under Governor Susan Kihika’s leadership, is set to operationalize the Cooperative revolving fund. This initiative aims to facilitate SACCOS in accessing affordable credit, further supporting their economic endeavors and fostering financial sustainability.
The meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including Shabab MCA Hon Macharia Wathiai, Jackline Kibui (Ward Administrator, Shabab), representatives from Empolos Hotel management, Discovery BB Sacco, Britam Insurance, Safaricom, among others.
