Nakuru County Celebrates International Day of Peace at Shabab Grounds

Nakuru County marked this year’s International Day of Peace at Shabab Grounds in Nakuru Town West Sub-County, under the theme “Celebrating the Culture of Peace.” The event brought together various stakeholders and highlighted the County’s commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and community development.

County Commissioner Loyford Kibara, MBS, lauded Governor Susan Kihika for her relentless efforts in promoting peace and unity among Nakuru’s diverse communities. He praised the partnership between the County Government and National Security agencies, which has played a pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. Mr. Kibara also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat illicit brews and drug abuse, noting that these initiatives are vital for promoting healthier communities and sustainable development.

Josephine Atieno, the County Executive Committee Member for Youth, Sports, Gender, Social Services, and Inclusivity, echoed the Commissioner’s sentiments, acknowledging the role of security agencies in ensuring peaceful coexistence. She called on the youth to respect leaders—both elected and administrative—as well as local business owners. Atieno emphasized that fostering respect and collaboration within the community would open doors to greater opportunities, such as government tenders. She also pointed out that Governor Kihika’s administration has been actively working to promote peace through religious support and soccer tournaments that unite youths and communities.

Atieno further encouraged reformed gang members to consider forming Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to access government tenders and other growth opportunities. She reiterated Governor Kihika’s vision of using sports and other social initiatives to build a more peaceful and cohesive county.

The event saw participation from various leaders and organizations, including Erick Muriuki (Head of Culture and Tourism), Boniface Mwaura (Chairman of Nakuru for Peace), representatives from the Alternative Justice System (AJS), the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Kenya Red Cross, Tobias Foundation, local chiefs, and assistant chiefs. Their collective commitment to peace underscored the county’s dedication to nurturing a culture of unity and respect across all communities.
