The County Government of Nakuru is taking strides in environmental stewardship. Today, staff from the County Government of Nakuru led by the County Executive Committee Member for Roads and Infrastructure, Engineer Michael Kamau, and Subukia Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Isabella Makori, joined forces with residents in Kirengero forest for a tree planting exercise. This impactful initiative unfolded in collaboration with Planet Patrons, a non-governmental organization led by Hon. Wanjiku Njoroge, aimed at revitalizing the 27-acre Kirengero Forest.

The tree planting exercise, a significant step towards rehabilitating the forest, witnessed the planting of over a thousand trees. Kirengero Forest is a key water catchment area in Subukia Sub-county, underlining the ecological significance of this restoration effort. This endeavour aligns seamlessly with Governor Susan Kihika’s mission to plant 30 million trees in Nakuru County by 2030, reflecting a broader commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Chief Officer in the Office of the Governor, Martin Kagai, lent his support to the initiative, leading a dedicated team from the Office of the Governor. His presence underscores the high-level commitment to the success of this environmental conservation project, emphasizing the collaborative nature of such endeavours.

The tree planting exercise received participation from various stakeholders, including the National Youth Service (NYS) officers, area chiefs, and Subukia and Waseges Ward Administrators—Stephen Macharia and Gitonga Kinyanjui, respectively. Enforcement officers also played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the initiative.

Beyond the immediate ecological benefits, such as enhancing water catchment areas and fostering biodiversity, this tree planting exercise symbolizes a collective effort to combat climate change and promote sustainable development. The engagement of government officials, community leaders, and residents reflects a shared responsibility towards nurturing a greener, healthier future for Nakuru County.

As the seedlings take root in Kirengero Forest, the gesture becomes a living testament to the county’s dedication to environmental conservation. It echoes the sentiment that each tree planted is a step towards a more sustainable and resilient ecosystem. Nakuru County’s commitment to such initiatives not only contributes to the global fight against climate change but also paves the way for a thriving, green legacy for generations to come.
