Nakuru County Leaders Unite to Combat Gender-Based Violence During 16 Days of Activism



The Directorate of Gender in Nakuru County, in collaboration with USAID TUJENGE JAMII, recently engaged in a one-on-one dialogue with community leaders from Njoro Sub-County to discuss on ways to combat Gender-Based violence. The discussions revolved around GBV, Legal Frameworks on GBV, and strategies to ensure the dissemination of the 2010 constitution copies to relevant authorities in key areas to fight against GBV.

This conversation is part of the global initiative, 16 Days of Activism 2023, with the theme “UNITE! Invest to Prevent all forms of violence against women and girls.” The annual campaign, observed between November 25 and December 10, aims to raise awareness and prompt action to end gender-based violence.

The area Deputy County Commissioner underscored the urgent need for community awareness regarding GBV, emphasizing the importance of fostering respect and dignity for all members of society. He further called for a continuous and open dialogue as an essential step in addressing the root causes of GBV and creating a safer and more supportive community.

The dialogue brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including Gender Officer Vivian Yegon, Deputy County Commissioners, Assistant County Commissioner, Njoro Sub-County Health Officers, Officer in Charge (OCS) for Njoro, Gender Desk Officers, and representatives from various organizations. Among them were USAID Tujenge Jamii, HIV Free Generation, MG Innovation Hub, National Legal Aid Services (NLAS), Nyumba Kumi, Community Health promoters, Chief’s, Sub-county Education Officer, Headteachers, and Religious leaders.

The collective presence of these figures highlighted the multi-faceted approach required to address GBV effectively. By involving representatives from law enforcement, healthcare, education, and religious sectors, the dialogue aimed to foster a comprehensive understanding of GBV issues and formulate collective strategies for prevention and intervention.

As Nakuru County participates in the global 16 Days of Activism campaign, the commitment to creating a safer and more equitable society is evident. Through sustained dialogues and collaboration with various stakeholders, the county endeavors to not only raise awareness about GBV but also implement practical measures that contribute to its eradication. This collective effort reflects Nakuru’s dedication to promoting the principles of respect, dignity, and gender equality within the community, fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for all.
