Nakuru County Pioneers Waste-to-Energy Transformation at Nakuru Free Area Market

Nakuru County has achieved a milestone by converting waste to energy at the Nakuru Free Area Market. This eco-friendly endeavor is the result of a collaborative effort between Nakuru County and the Micro Enterprise Support Programme Trust’s AGRIFI initiative, marking a substantial step towards sustainable waste management and energy generation.

The success of this transformative project was spotlighted during the second day of the One Health Approach workshop, emphasizing its status as a standout initiative under the wet market concept implemented by the program. The One Health Approach workshop, a platform promoting the integration of human, animal, and environmental health, provided a fitting setting to acknowledge Nakuru County’s commitment to innovative and holistic solutions.

At the Nakuru Free Area Market, traders have reaped the benefits of this forward-thinking project. The introduction of 60 worktops and 300 crates not only facilitates improved organization but also plays a pivotal role in elevating food safety and hygiene standards within the market. This strategic move aligns with the county’s broader vision to replicate the wet market concept in a total of 11 markets, covering each of the 11 sub-counties.

The wet market concept, spearheaded by the Micro Enterprise Support Programme Trust (MESPT)-AGRIFI collaboration, goes beyond waste-to-energy conversion. It encompasses a comprehensive approach to market infrastructure, sanitation, and sustainability. By addressing these critical aspects, Nakuru County aims to create model markets that prioritize both environmental responsibility and the well-being of market participants.

As Nakuru County sets the stage for replicating this successful model across various sub-counties, the impact on local communities is expected to be far-reaching. The workshop, which brought together officials from 13 counties, served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, fostering a shared commitment to embracing innovative solutions for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Nakuru County’s dedication to implementing progressive projects, as evidenced by the waste-to-energy conversion at Nakuru Free Area Market, showcases a commitment to environmental stewardship and community welfare. As the county continues to lead in sustainable practices, the ripple effects are poised to inspire similar initiatives nationwide.
