In anticipation of the upcoming heavy rains and the potential impacts of El Nino, the Nakuru County government is proactively working to devise strategies for mitigating dangers across all sub-counties. Led by Acting Director for Roads and Public Transport, Edgar Sirima, a team from the Department of Infrastructure conducted a mapping exercise to identify disaster-prone areas within Kiamaina Ward.
Kiamaina Ward, situated in a low-lying area, faces the challenges of flooding as water accumulates from surrounding hills and flows towards the lowest parts of the ward, including Kiti, Mawanga, Tuinuane, and Maili Sita. The team’s objective is to develop a long-term solution for the persistent problem of flooding in the area.
The mapping exercise has identified specific locations that require immediate attention, such as Sauti ya Mwananchi and the vicinity of St. Anthony’s School. This proactive approach aims to enhance emergency response capabilities and safeguard residents from potential risks associated with heavy rains.
Key stakeholders present during the exercise included Kiamaina Ward MCA Paul Warege, Menengai Ward MCA Wilson Mwangi, KeRRA Road Officer Hillary Cherono, Surveyor Kennedy Njenga from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and Surveyor Caroline Mwangi from Bahati.
Nakuru County’s commitment to proactive disaster management reflects its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents during adverse weather conditions.
