The County Government of Nakuru in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is spearheading a hybridized clean energy agribusiness project in Kokwomoi, Soin Ward, Rongai Sub-county. This initiative is set to revolutionize agriculture, livestock farming, and aquaculture by integrating geothermal and solar energy into farming operations.
During an inspection tour led by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water and Environment, Dr Nelson Maara, key milestones were highlighted, including:
✅ Milk pasteurization using geothermal energy to enhance dairy production.
✅ Tilapia fish farming with a capacity of 2,400 fish, supported by energy-efficient cooling systems.
✅ Drip irrigation for vegetable and fruit farming, ensuring water-efficient food production.
✅ An 8 by 15-meter greenhouse to boost sustainable horticulture.
Key Developments in the Project
Water Access: Two boreholes, yielding 7.5m³ and 4.8m³ per hour, have been successfully drilled to support irrigation and aquaculture.
Infrastructure: The site is now fenced, with a drying area, site office, and storage facility in place.
Renewable Energy: Solar panels are being installed to power essential operations, ensuring sustainability.
Livestock Support: A community water point and cattle trough will serve over 2,000 cattle and goats in the area.
Fish Farming Expansion: A fishpond equipped with cooling units and rising tanks is under development to optimize aquaculture production.
Empowering the Community
To ensure long-term success, a cooperative society will be established to manage the project, ensuring community involvement and economic sustainability. Approximately 500 households are set to benefit from improved agribusiness opportunities, water access, and sustainable farming methods.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Maara emphasized that Governor Susan Kihika’s administration is committed to climate-smart projects that drive food security, economic empowerment, and environmental conservation. “This partnership with UNEP demonstrates how clean energy solutions can revolutionize agriculture, enhance productivity, and protect our environment for future generations,” he stated.
With the successful implementation of this initiative, Nakuru County is setting a national precedent for renewable energy adoption in agribusiness, paving the way for sustainable economic growth and resilience in the agricultural sector.
