Nakuru County’s Ambitious Initiative Takes Shape in paving way for affordable housing

In a move towards addressing the pressing need for affordable housing, Hon. John Kihagi, the County Executive for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, spearheaded a groundbreaking site mapping endeavor in Gilgil and Naivasha Sub-Counties. This critical initiative sets the stage for the official launch of the Affordable Housing Program by His Excellency, President William Ruto, signaling a significant stride in the collaborative efforts between the National and County Governments.

The Affordable Housing Program is aligned with UN Sustainable Goal 11, emphasizing sustainable urban development. H.E. Governor Susan Kihika, under whose leadership the initiative thrives, envisions the creation of 30,000 affordable housing units in Nakuru County. The site mapping exercise, led by Hon. John Kihagi, represents a pivotal step in transforming this vision into reality.

Accompanied by a team of technical experts and community opinion leaders, including Chief Officer Lands and Physical Planning Catherine Changwony, Director Urban Planning Willy Keter, Director Land Administration Elizabeth Munyui, Gilgil ward MCA Rose Njoroge, Daniel Njoroge from the Office of the Gilgil Mp, and other board members, Hon. John Kihagi ensured a comprehensive assessment of available land for the Affordable Housing Program.

Nakuru County is already making significant strides in the realm of affordable housing. Presently, 605 units are taking shape in Kivumbini, Nakuru East Sub-County, with an additional 220 units each in Bahati Ward, Bahati Sub-County, and Elburgon, Molo Sub-County. These developments are poised to offer not just housing but decent and affordable living options for the residents.

The Affordable Housing Program goes beyond bricks and mortar; it is a commitment to fostering sustainable communities. The mapping exercise not only identifies suitable lands but also considers factors like accessibility, infrastructure, and community needs. This comprehensive approach ensures that the upcoming housing units contribute to the holistic development of the region.

The dedication of the County Executive and the collaborative spirit of the technical team and community leaders echo Nakuru County’s commitment to uplifting the living standards of its residents. As the site mapping concludes, anticipation builds for the official launch by President William Ruto, marking a milestone in Nakuru County’s journey towards creating vibrant, affordable, and sustainable communities through the Affordable Housing Program. The mapped sites represent not just plots of land but the foundation of a brighter and more inclusive future for Nakuru’s inhabitants
