In response to the recent flash floods that wreaked havoc in Oljorai, Eburru Mbaruk Ward, Gilgil Sub-County, Nakuru County Disaster Management swiftly mobilized a team to conduct a comprehensive fact-finding mission. The primary goal of the tour was to assess the aftermath of the disaster and devise strategies to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.
Led by Disaster Management Officer John Muchai and Sub-County Administrator Veronica Gachambi, the team, along with experts from the Water Resources Authority, conducted a thorough examination focused on establishing waterways and Riparian land. These efforts aim to develop proactive measures that can prevent the recurrence of disasters similar to the one witnessed on March 27, 2023.
One immediate intervention undertaken during the mission was the closure of a road in the Manyatta area, which had been significantly affected by soil erosion. This decisive action seeks to prevent further damage and enhance the safety of the local community.
The team’s tour covered areas, including Isabella Academy, Ngema Kayole, Olepolos, Topizia Farm, Kambi Mhindi Farm, and the Manyatta area. By visiting these locations, the experts gained valuable insights into the extent of the damage and engaged with affected communities to better understand their needs.
Following the on-site assessments, the team of experts, including representatives from Nakuru County Disaster Management and the Water Resources Authority, will retreat to compile a detailed hydrological report. This comprehensive document will serve as the basis for formulating targeted recommendations to address the root causes of the flash floods and implement effective preventive measures.
