More than 150 households in Kabongoi Location, Tinet Ward, Kuresoi South Sub-County, Nakuru County, now have access to safe and clean water following the successful protection and development of the Tiriptim Water Spring.
The project was implemented under the IDH ISLAH Program, with civil works carried out by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, in partnership with the Upper Kipsonoi Water Resource Users Association (WRUA). The spring, located near Taita Centre, was developed under the joint supervision of the SNV technical team and the Sub-County Water Officer, with overall coordination from Dr. Nelson Maara, County Executive Committee Member for Water and Environment.
The Tiriptim Spring Protection Project included the construction of a water collection chamber, a communal water point, a cattle trough, and tree planting within the spring area and riparian buffer zone. This infrastructure ensures that households now access clean domestic water from a protected source, separate from livestock watering points.
Prior to the intervention, the unprotected spring served both people and animals, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental degradation. With the protection now in place, residents of Kabongoi Location benefit from improved water quality and water point hygiene.
The project was a collaborative effort involving the local community, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), WRUA, SNV, and the County Government of Nakuru. It supports Nakuru County’s water resource management strategy and contributes to climate change adaptation goals through watershed protection and sustainable water access.
This initiative aligns with Nakuru County’s broader agenda of improving rural water supply systems, strengthening community-based resource management, and promoting public-private partnerships in the water sector.
