UN-HABITAT Empowers City Board towards a sustainable development goal

In a dynamic and collaborative effort to enhance urban governance and sustainable development, the second day of the City Board’s workshop session unfolded with a focus on crucial objectives. The agenda included structuring board committees, aligning resilience strategies and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with City programs, and amplifying public participation through the Voluntary Local Review (VLR).

A significant aspect of the workshop was the support provided by UN-HABITAT in assessing the City Board’s level of SDG implementation. This partnership reflects a commitment to global initiatives and underscores the importance of integrating sustainable development principles into local governance structures.

Integral to the proceedings was the ceremonial handover of key management tools from the outgoing Chair to the incoming chair. This thoughtful transition process aimed to ensure continuity and familiarize the new leadership with the board’s functions. The City’s management, displaying a proactive approach, swiftly integrated new board members into City affairs, emphasizing a seamless and effective transition.

Discussions during the workshop also revolved around the review of the conclusion of Kenya Urban Support projects and strategic planning for the second phase. This aligns with the County Urban Institutional Strategy, championed under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika, focusing on empowering urban boards to deliver functions and services effectively to residents.

Addressing the gathering, Hon John Kihagi, CECM for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, highlighted the importance of urban boards maintaining vibrancy and inclusivity. He emphasized the need for robust engagement with all stakeholders in urban and peri-urban areas to ensure comprehensive and representative decision-making.

The event was attended not only by the City Board members but also by dedicated staff from the City Management. This collaborative effort between leaders, management, and international partners underscores a commitment to fostering resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban development.

As the City Board continues to evolve and align itself with global sustainability goals, this workshop serves as a testament to the dedication and proactive measures taken by the City and its partners to build a resilient and inclusive urban future. The emphasis on effective governance, strategic planning, and community engagement positions the City as a model for sustainable urban development on the regional and global stage.
