The County Government of Nakuru, in collaboration with traders at Wakulima Market in Biashara Ward, Nakuru Town East Sub-county, has agreed on a plan to clean and rehabilitate the market’s drainage system and concrete the access road. The initiative is aimed at improving the market’s infrastructure to facilitate better accessibility and hygiene.
During a site visit led by County Secretary Dr. Samuel Mwaura, officials engaged with traders to discuss the scope of works and implementation timelines. The meeting resolved that the contractor would be on-site by early next week to commence the works. It was also agreed that youths from within the market would be given priority in recruitment as casual labourers, creating short-term job opportunities for the local community.
The traders were assured that the construction schedule would be planned to avoid interruptions to daily business operations. This arrangement will allow ongoing trade activities to continue while ensuring progress on the improvement works.
The visit brought together key county leadership, including County Executive Committee Member for Trade Hon. Stephen Kuria, Chief Officer for Roads and Transport Samuel Ndegwa, Chief Officer for Lands Stella Mwaura, and Nakuru City Manager Gitau Thabanja. Also present were Political Advisor Hon. Francis Njoroge, Enforcement Director Charles Nyanaro, a representative of the area MCA, and members of the Wakulima Market leadership.
The rehabilitation of the drains is expected to improve stormwater management within the market, reducing water stagnation and associated health risks. Concreting the access road will enhance movement for traders, customers, and suppliers, supporting the efficient flow of goods and services.
This engagement between county officials and market traders demonstrates a collaborative approach to infrastructure development, with both parties working toward sustainable improvements that serve the interests of the community and the local economy.
